So we finally took the family camping. Between the move to Texas in '06 and the rainy season we had last year, we just haven't had the chance...until now. Needless to say, we started small and only planned a one nighter. For all of our sakes, it was long enough since the trip was purely experimental--and by experimental we mean, was he actually going to fall asleep? It was about 10:30 PM before we had a completely zonked out kid. However, it was the cooler temperatures that kept us awake only because we weren't really expecting temeratures in the lower 50s with a breeze...we were more or less prepared for a night in the mid-60s...so we did checks every 15 minutes just making sure that the little soldier was warm enough. Oh well. Live and learn. It was a great time overall though. The stars felt as though we could reach them. Camping food and the smell of something being cooked on charcoal always brings a smile to our faces. And just sleeping (or trying to) while the wind rustles the leaves and the crickets and birds talk through the night is just pure bliss.
We can't wait to do it again. Until then, we all take a mid-day nap.
